Abstract
Studies were carried out on the leaves of Cassia alata. The leaf powder of Cassia alata was extracted with 80% ethanol defatted with n-hexane and resolved into water-soluble and water insoluble parts. The water-soluble part was then extracted with ethyl acetate and the extract was chromatographed over silica gel (70-230 mesh) column and successively eluted with a gradient mixture of organic solvent with increasing polarities. A new isoflavone 5, 3/, 4/-trihydroxy, 7-methoxy isoflavone was isolated by the elution of the column with ethylacetate and methanol (70:30 v/v) and the isolated compound was purified by preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC). The compound was characterized on the basis of UV, IR, NMR, 13C- NMR and Mass spectrometry.
