Abstract

A novel Bis (salicylaldiminato)Cl2Fe(III) complex was synthesized by reacting N-salicylideneaniline Schiff base and FeCl3.6H2O in methanolic solution. The complex was characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, DSC study and Mass spectrometry. The crystal structure was solved by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) method and Rietveld refinement was performed. The PXRD analysis shows a slightly distorted octahedral complex crystalizes in monoclinic crystal system with cell parameters: a = 15.565, b = 7.027, c = 12.181andβ = 108.790 and space group P121.Magnetic susceptibility measurement (µeff value 5.38 BM) suggests paramagnetic character of the complex. The mass spectra analysis confirms the formation of the complex and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) characterizes thermal phase transitions (e.g. melting point & dissociation). The UV-Vis spectroscopy shows characteristic Ligand to Metal charge transfer band at 570nm and FT-IR shows band sat 584and482cm−1assigned for Fe-N and Fe-O bonds, respectively.
